Apostille in Calgary: the Alberta route, without the three mistakes that bounce it
Alberta’s apostille authority is Official Documents and Appointments, in Edmonton. It takes mail and courier only, with no counter, no rush and no while-you-wait service, so a Calgary document travels 300 kilometres north whatever you decide. The good news is that Alberta is one of the quicker and cheaper authorities in Canada: $25 per document and 7 to 10 business days. The bad news is that it is unusually strict about paperwork, and most refusals we see on Calgary files come down to three avoidable details.
Alberta refuses on paperwork, not on documents
The office is fast when the package is right. It sends the package back, unprocessed, when it is not, and by the time it reaches Calgary again two weeks are gone. Here is what actually goes wrong.
1. No printed payment receipt
Alberta does not take cheques or cards in the envelope. You pay online through Alberta eServices before you send anything, receive a receipt by email, and print it into the package with the Apostille Request Form. A package that arrives without the receipt is not processed. People pay, forget to print, and lose a fortnight.
2. A handwritten or account-billed waybill
For the return, the office wants a prepaid electronic courier waybill, or a prepaid Canada Post Priority or Xpresspost envelope with a legible return address. It states plainly that handwritten waybills are not accepted. Without a compliant return, your apostilled original goes into regular mail, untracked, or waits.
3. A photocopy, a laminated original, or a document from the wrong province
Alberta wants the original or a properly certified copy. Laminated documents are refused on sight, as everywhere in Canada. And a document notarized in British Columbia or issued in Saskatchewan belongs to that province’s authority, no matter that the owner lives in Calgary; Edmonton simply mails it back.

Courier it yourself when
- You have one public Alberta document: a Vital Statistics certificate, a University of Calgary or SAIT transcript, a Court of King’s Bench order, an Alberta Corporate Registry record.
- You are comfortable with the online payment, the printed receipt, and buying a compliant prepaid return waybill or Xpresspost envelope.
- You have three to four weeks of margin and a Convention-member destination.
- You will keep the apostilled original in Canada or carry it abroad yourself.

- Your document is private and needs an Alberta notary public first: a power of attorney, an affidavit or statutory declaration, a certified copy of a passport, a company resolution. We coordinate the notary, then the apostille.
- Your file mixes authorities. A Calgary birth certificate plus an RCMP check is Edmonton plus Ottawa, on very different timelines; a B.C. degree adds Victoria. We run them in parallel and reassemble the set.
- You are abroad and the document is in Calgary with family, a school or a lawyer. We collect it from them and ship the finished set to you, tracked.
- The destination is not a Convention member (Nigeria is a frequent Calgary case), so an embassy legalization in Ottawa follows the Alberta authentication.
- You want a written all-in price first, a PDF scan the day the document is back, and one accountable contact for an office that has no counter to visit.
Our service fee is published: $139 for the first document, $29 for each additional one in the same submission, never more than $299 per submission. The $25 Alberta fee is billed at cost with the receipt.

Apostille is enough
The Philippines, India, Pakistan, China, the United Kingdom, Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Colombia, Vietnam (a member since September 11, 2026), Germany and the United States are all Convention members. Once Edmonton (or Ottawa, for federal documents) attaches the apostille, the document is ready. Many also want a certified translation, coordinated before or after as the receiving country requires.
Legalization still required
Nigeria, Iran, Ethiopia and a number of other African and Middle Eastern states are not members. The document is authenticated in Edmonton, then legalized by that country’s embassy or consulate, almost always in Ottawa. Embassy fees vary and are quoted before you commit. See our country pages.
